Creating dimension in abstract forms

Found objects: A piece of Styrofoam or metal, a floor tile, even a pixelated TV image. For me, they’re inspiration and expression. They provide a way to play with dimension in abstract forms.

My early work, paintings, were not based on found objects, but on flattened imagery and limited space. Forgoing landscapes with focal points, my brushstrokes were tactile, just a half inch deep. The paint was the painting with no illusion of deep space.

From there, my journey into multiple abstract art forms began, still working with dimension but using found objects. I moved from my hometown of Philadelphia to New York City, immersing myself into the 1980s energy of a city recovering from the 1970s bankruptcy.

Study at the Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art (PAFA) in Philadelphia prepared me well for the transition. I settled in the East Village, where I still live and work. In addition, I have a studio in coastal Blue Hill, Maine.

Garfagnana, Italy, is also a place where I produce art. Since 2019, I have created marble sculptures there, as part of an annual residency for the Digital Stone Project.

Because I was the head preparator for PAFA and then for a gallery in New York City, I became very familiar with art handling and installation. That experience led to my opening Creative Crating Inc. as well as Fine Art Services and Transport in 1992. My two companies continue to be highly respected in the international art community for delivering museum-quality art services. Headquarters are in Long Island City, New York.

I’ve always been driven to make images and objects. I invite you to see the latest expressions in plaster, stone, metal, Styrofoam and paper. Then if you want more information, please contact me here.
